Chicago Terrain Race

Yesterday, my dad, my cousin and I did a thing called the Chicago Terrain Race. Basically, it is a 5k obstacle course with "over twenty obstacles"! Some of them are like mud pits, others are walls you need to get over. Actually, the first "obstacle" was even before the starting line. For the start, they put you and the fifty other people in the wave in three big portable pools. So, the first obstacle was climbing out of a shoulder deep pool. I think this might have been so you get pre drenched. The whole course was set up in the fields around a speedway. Actually, the 10k course splits off and goes into the field to do some obstacles there. I think that would be pretty cool to do, but 10k plus obstacles is a lot to do.

The muddiest obstacle was super muddy. It was a trench with muddy, dirty water in it. Also, there were ropes going over the pit, so basically you had to army crawl through muddy, yucky water. Also, before and after the trench, there were super slippery mud hills, so slippery that I just fell in the water! There was another one that was really muddy, and difficult. There were extremely slippery mud hills that you had to climb over, but to make it worse, you had to start in waist deep water. It was difficult to get a good grip. Also, when you make it to the top, it is very likely that you will slip...and fall straight into more mud. Another muddy obstacle was a tube again the ground that you had to crawl through. This was interesting because it was very tight for my dad, and there were a lot of heavily built people around.

The hardest obstacle was a impossible version of monkey-bars. With one big difference, there were no bars. Just a short chain with a ball on the end. In the wave I was in, nobody could do it. The main reason why it was so difficult is because all the previous waves have gotten it all muddy, and there was no real grip, so it was impossible. Another obstacle I thought I had no chance on was, coincidentally, another version of monkey bars. This was near the end so while we were waiting for our wave to go, we saw many people go through it. The thing is, most of those people failed, and dropped into a pool of water, unlike the monkey balls where you could stand up and grab the chains. The thing that was different about these monkey bars is how they went in an arch, and the beams, once again, did not have bars, they had rock climbing grips on the side of them. This was very interesting, as you have better grip, but at the end, the top of your palm hurt a lot. But, even though we saw many people fall in, my dad and I made it! That was the thing I felt most accomplished about. Either that, or beating my dad in the final sprint.

In my opinion, the most fun obstacles were the walls. The first one was a pretty low one, around five feet, where you just had to jump/vault over. Another one was much higher, with a knotted rope coming down over the wall. Also, at regular intervals, there were lengths of wooden strips you could use as a foothold. On the opposite side, to get down, there was basically a ladder. The scary part was at the top, because it was pretty tall, and it was wobbly, and slippery, and you could fall off at any time. There were cargo nets also, which were pretty easy to climb over. But, there was this one version where you climbed up a very weird ladder, which only had two huge rungs. Then, you have to crawl/roll over a cargo net spaced between two walls. Then, its another net which you climb down. This one was a bit scary because there were all these kicking fee and people rolling over each other.

All in all, this was a very fun experience. I got rid of shoes, I got a medal, and I had a great time. I recommend this for people who like American Ninja warrior, and that sort of thing. But, if you don't like being wet and muddy, this is not for you!!
